Materials
Any type of ceramic plate will work. If I am working on a central design then I will usually choose plain white otherwise any colour is suitable.
Choose acrylic paints or markers which are waterproof. For detailed designs I like to work with acrylic markers with a broad and a fine tip. The ones below are my favourites.
I purchase from Amazon.
You will probably find that you need an additional black marker There are plenty available. Just ensure that they are waterproof!
Tips on the process.
Prevent mistakes by initially mapping out your design on paper. Engage in a dummy run to perfect your concept without risking permanent errors on the plate's surface. Utilize pastel colors for outlining intricate designs on the plate before incorporating bold hues to enhance the final look. A second coat of colour is usually necessary to ensure a Flawless outcome.
Care
Hand painted tableware require a little more pampering than shop bought ones but it is well worth the effort.
Check that the paint and markers you choose are safe to use with food.
Be aware that they don’t take kindly to being scraped by knives and forks!
I prefer to keep mine as serving dishes or side plates. for dry items of food like bread, cakes and biscuits. They also make stunning plates as a base for plain white pasta or soup bowls.
Although they are usually happy with a cooler dishwasher economy program I like to hand wash . Again, do check the care instructions included with your choice of paint or marker
